Hello, I’m planning a Colorado Trail thru hike this summer and I’m looking for some good people to join me. I’m taking a 5 day mountaineering class July 20th through the 25th so I’m planning on starting the hike beginning in Denver August 1st. I think it will be good to start hiking in August due to the excessive amount of late snowfall we are having this year. Anyone who is interested please contact me ASAP. I’m so excited for this trip and hope to find some good people to share the experience with.
thanks, PJ

PJ ~ I will be thru hiking as well but I am starting late June early July. I need to be back by August or there after so that schedule doesn’t fit mine. Good luck with your thru hike.

I finish up my job in Dallas on July 15th and am planning on heading up there as soon as I’m done. As of now, it is 2 buddies, my dog, and myself. We are planning starting our thru hike either the 18th, 19th, or 20th, and will be taking a pretty leisurely pace so we can fly fish a lot.

But I’m not doing the whole thing at once. I do have left the last part of the trail, from the Marshall Pass area to the end. Your time frame fits well with me, to at least join in on some of the trail. Not sure if that will work out for you logistically.

I plan to roll into Denver on July 15th, re-supply, catch a couple of Rockies games and then begin hiking on roughly the 17th (of course, if it’s raining on the 17th, to heck with that! Never leave a warm, dry place to begin hiking in the rain!). I probably will do 10-15 miles per day until Breck, at which point I’ll be starting to get my trail legs.

I was supposed to start June 14 but my travel partner just ditched out. Trying to re-assess now. The snow’s kind of making me think I should push it back to early or mid-July. Anyone feel free to contact me if they’re looking for a hiking partner, I wasn’t looking to do the trail solo.

You could still start hiking around mid June and be ok with the snow. The first few sections are at lower elevations and should be fine by then. The sections around Buena Vista and further south might not free from snow until mid July though. If you wanted you could go out of order and do the lower elevation hikes first. Segments around Saguache are lower elevation and should be ok soon, as well as the sections before Breckenridge. I’m again looking for someone to join me for segments 25-28 as well as 15-17.

My daughter and I are going to start doing portions of segmants next week meaning about 5 miles in and 5 miles out the next day. Next week we are planning to do the last part of segment 14 starting on HWY 50. Does anyone have any info on this segment? (We have the Colorado Trail book.) I’m mostly interested in availability of water. We found the stream completely dried up on Phantom Canyon Road and this segment isn’t too far awy.

Thanks.

There are several streams that should be running strong. At 5.2 miles you will be at Angel of Shavano Campground. There is tap water there. (It is a USFS campground that charges a fee to camp.)

Thanks for the information on the water.

Do you happen to know what the scenary is like from HW 50 to the campground? I’ve been checking Google earth, but it is hard to tell. It seems kind of open for the first part and then wooded. We don’t want to stay in a campground unless absolutely necessary, but we would like some shade. A fire is optional depending on the area.

Except for the climb out of US50 which is a bare hillside, it’s mixed forest with some large meadows. Plenty of camping areas other than the campground. Look around before you cross the bridge by the campground. You’ll find a spot.

Bearcreek,

Thanks for your descrption of segment. We hiked from HWY 50 to the Angel of Shavano campground. My daughter was terrified of the heights for the descent in the last part of the trail. Rather than leaving it for morning, she insisted on hiking back up it yesterday, so we did.

We camped at a little pond maybe 1/2 to 3/4 miles north of Lost Creek. During the night we heard VERY loud Elk bugling. I’d never heard it before and thought it might be an alien abduction coming or something. Finally we figured it out. In the morning, it went on for about a half hour.

Our water had ice in it in the morning, so it must have been below freezing. At about 3, dew and frost started forming on the sleeping bags (we seldom sleep in tents) so we got up and stood aroun and drank coffee until daybrake. We generally get up real early anyway.

Next weekend, we are planning on hiking from the Angel of Shavano campground to Squaw Creek. Does anyone know if there are campsites there with fire rings?

Thanks,

Gershon

PS: As you can probably tell, we are somewhat new, so these are training hikes to learn and perhaps one day fulfill a dream to hike the trail. Right now, the biggest issue is food and water supplies. I know we can both get in shape just by hiking more.
