Anybody know of a cheap way out west to CAMPO from Ohio (for PCT thru-hike)? I’m flexible to leave from late March to late April. I don’t like to fly.

I took a greyhound bus from NC to Sandiego, a trolley to El Cajon and another bus to Lake Morena. I would not recommend sitting on a bus for 48 hours straight it was the hardest and worst part of my trip from Campo to WA.:bawling

Thanks for the Bus suggestion. I will take your recommendation not to ride so long. It did give me a idea to take a bus out to Colorado, visit with friends, then take another bus a few days later. I’ll maybe get a couple fourteeners in while hanging out in Colorado. Another thought I had is ride boards. Is there a website or board where you can arrange carpool rides across states/the country? This might “break me in” for hitching on the trail which is new to me too.

Craiglist.com has ride boards. It is under “rideshare” in the Community sections of the one closest to where you live. Hey, you never know!

the bus is the longest most expensive getto way to get to the trail, IMO. if you buy a ticket from Southwest airlines, 2 weeks in advance and online, the most it will cost you is $99- bucks ( $110- after airport taxes ). Southwest flys to San Diego and LA. take the local transit line in San Diego(orange line I think) to El Cajon tranist center, $2- bucks. then take the southeast rural route (cant remember the bus number) to the trail head (it will drop you in Campo, Ca one mile from the PCT trail head) $8- bucks.

total = 110 + 2 + 8 = $120 ( or there abouts)

You can leave home in the morning and be on the trail, camped out, by sunset.

the reason I stay away from the bus; it usually cost about $200 bucks, the 4-6 days of travel is miserable and will cost you another $100- bucks in food and drink, and you feel like crap at the end, if your trying to break a smoking habbit ya got nothing but a bunch of pit stops so everyone can unload just to smoke, if you don’t smoke-well life sucks, rule of thumb-the longer you have to sit on a bus the worse the toilet smells. BUT, if you really want to appreciate the trail- just take a bus ride! :wink:

I’m sorry, I miss-read “I don’t like to fly” as “I like to fly.” My bad.

Friend of mine who doesn’t fly took the train in 03 from Chicago to southern CA somehow, don’t know the routes from OH, or where in OH you are. Check out Amtrak.

Saying you Left April 4th
Greyhound prices… 7-Day Advance Purchase
$123.00 From Columbus to San Diego, 2 day 3 hours

Leaving on the 4th
Delta Air Lines
Flight 6476 operated by Shuttle America / Flight 575
$124 per pers

word to the wise, if you purchase you airfare 14 days in advance you save quite a bit of cash. Anything after the 14 day quota, you save $$$$.

If you take the train, you’ll have to leave from Chicago. The train is more $$$$ in this case compared to flying. I’m leaving from Boston, to Deming NM for $123.00 2 day bus ride.

Check out Airtran.com, Hotwire.com, Travelocity.com, Economytravel.com to name a few, but I don’t travel on my free time.
