Should I have a teather for my ice ax for the trail?
Should I bring my heavier duty pack for the southern california section since I may need to carry 7 liters of water at times instead of my granit gear vapor trail?

be perfect, assuming your not carrying more than 5-6 days food. I used a vapor last year and its the best pack Ive found for the price. A tether might be a good idea but chances are you won’t actually need to use the axe. Just use some p cord.

I believe that P-Cord is that braided nylon parachute cord. Its very thin, lite and strong. I use it for my bear bag rope and to tie out my tarp.

You won’t need an iceaxe leash for the PCT. No danger of losing it. In fact you don’t need an iceaxe for the PCT, esp. if you use trekking poles. In a year like this year, beef up your foot wear in the Sierra.
