Hello all. I am planning on starting the PCT (nobo) mid (ish) April '09. Am wondering if there was anyone out there who would rent/ loan an ice axe (65cm) and a bear canister for the areas that need them. Thank you for your time and help.

I just purchased a Camp XLA 210 60cm ice axe for use next year. I would be more than happy to let you use this in '09 if you still need one, and if you are willing to use an axe that is 5 cm shorter than you desire. '09 is such a long way away though. I’ll also be purchasing an Ursack most likely, which I’d be willing to let you use as well.

Go over on the PCT-L–it is reported there (by an email from an SIBBG meeting attendee) that the SIBBG voted October 24 to rescind conditional approval of the Ursack, so that’s no longer an option in the restricted areas.

Unfortunately this ruling may put Ursack out of business. Too bad, because the Ursack is an extremely useful item outside of the Sierra! Evidently Sierra bears are too well conditioned that bag = pinata and keep after the thing until they manage to breach it. I’d get one anyway ) to use elsewhere (it keeps out rodents as well as bears less conditioned than those in the Sierra) and rent a canister for the Sierra. There are a number of canister rental programs.

absolute neccesity for the high sierra or just a comfort piece of gear that i may need. of course dependant on the snowpack. say the snowpack is a “normal” year
