Ice axe or cramp ons'

Are any of these two items needed for a CT thru hike? I leave for Denver tomorrow and I will be spending the week up there aclimating to the altitude. This will give me time to go to REI or any other outdoors department store to get last minute items. I am all set but, since there is an unusual amount of snow I would like to know if cramp ons or ice axes would be a must? Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

On CTF facebook page today, user describes doing Seg 7 yesterday. Claimed GPS & WAYPOINTS essential to find trail in the snowpack landscape. Said they needed snowshoes and had them on & off six times. Guessing Seg 8 snowpack even lengthier.

FYI, I’ve met 2 prospective thruhikers in Breck that decided to stop thruhiking after having to back out of the west side of section 6.

10 miles up into section 6, there’s 3+ feet of snow as far as the eye can see. I was there 2 days ago.
