Icy trail, Springer MT. Shuttles

imported
#1

I shuttle hikers to/from any point along the AT from Springer Mt. to Fraklin NC. Last Sunday, 2/22 Springer’s north face was covered with snow, the trail very icy and treacherous. Cold weather this week means little thawing on the north sides of the higher Mts.

I’ll be checking Springer and shuttling up to Unicoi Gap Sunday, will report snow coverage. Any updates re: snow/ice on the AT in GA & NC will be appreciated.

I shuttle for reasonable fees, will try to go wherever, do whatever hikers need, offer suggestions and alternatives to minimize the time & hassles geting from ATL to the AT. Call Richard Anderson 706-276-2520 richardjanderson@etcmail.com

we appreciate your help in updating conditions on the trail…we’ve got friends heading out and, honestly, we’re a little concerned this year…paw and i have started a coule of AT hikes in february and have always recommended it as a good time to start…in fact we had planned to go out this weekend for a month on the trail (before going back to work in april)…but, DUDE!..have any of us ever seen such a wintery february???YIKES! this weather is NUTS!..nevertheless, we are wishing all our hiker friends out there ‘Godspeed’ (and LOTS of trail magic!)…maybe we can get some more discussion goin’ here concerning trail conditions right now…i think it might be very needful this year…very helpful…

Did the Approach Trail last saturday (2/19). It was ice and snow from Frosty Mt. to Springer. I doubt that there has been much melting this week, and more snow and ice are predicted for Tuesday (3/2). The trail is passable , but I would suggest carrying crampons.

yeah…at least yak trax (which is what we used with good success in '03 and '06…tied shoe strings on them as they tend to sometimes slip off)…but it sounds like this is the year for snow shoes!..in '06 we encountered deep snow in the smokies and were ‘jealous’ when we discovered someone was apparently using snow shoes ahead of us!..the yak trax are great on ice but not so much for fresh or soft snow…(it was best when the snow froze and we could go quickly over the top of it with our trax without postholing)…anyway, this is a crazy weather year, so all you 2010-ers be careful out there…and have fun!
