									Jon,

You can’t go wrong with a hike through the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia or the Great Smokey Mountain Park in Tennesee/NC.
Which one? Here’s my two cents. The Shenandoah hike will be easier as far as the hiking goes and more social. There will be other hikers around and campgrounds and other “stops” to relax, get some ice cream, etc. The wildlife is used to people around so you WILL see deer and perhaps a bear or two.
The Great Smokey Mountain Hike has great scenery and neat hiking. It will be more difficult hiking and is more remote. But if you are looking to get deeper into nature, this would be the choice. Contact the Lodge at Fontana Dam … you may be able to leave a car there while you hike for a few days.
The Grayson Highlands in VA is also a popular hiking area. That is where you will meet the wild ponies. Don’t go just for the ponies though … you’ll hike through that area where the ponies are in about an hour!
I’m sure others will chime in with more options. Any day, or 10, on the A.T. is a good day!
Happy hiking!
