Okay, so I have finally settled on this sleeping bag to buy:

Here is my question:
I have had rather bad experiences with mummy bags in the past, often ending in uncomfortable nights sleep. I am considering buying a long bag…Is this a good idea?

is wide enough for you. Wide enough to turn over and thrash around some at night, like you do at home in your bed. Try it out before you buy it. Go to a gear shop and lay it or one with the same dimensions (make sure it IS the same dimensions) on the floor, get in, zip it up all the way, try turning from one side to another, tell the salesman to fooch off if he looks at you funnie.

My first bag has 6-8 extra inches in the bottom and I hate it. I sleep cold and it is hard to warm the extra space. It is not space that makes the bag feel roomier and, of course, it is extra weight. Compare bag dimensions by visiting on line sites. It sounds like you might like a bag wide cut at the hips and shoulders. I looked for the snuggest cut and when I roll over the entire bag goes with me. The zipper is always on my left side whether I am on my side, back or stomach. If I am too warm or feel constrained I unzip the foot of my bag about 12-15 inches. (Most bags come with double zippers)

You might check out the Western Mountaineering Alpinlite it has a 64"/39" shoulder/foot girth. Don’t get a bag that is too long the bigger the volume the more space you will have to heat. Look at the girth. Hope this helps! Draggin
