There are currently between 15 and 17 gallons of H2O stashed by Cache 22 from Fall River Mills at Cache 22, slightly up hill from Road 22 (east of the road, west of the trail, nobos need to look over their left shoulder). A nice little shaded area has been woven together out of local materials to form little nook. There is water in gallon jugs in the metal garbage can…last year was so dry, we had problems with critters chewing on the bottles left out in the open.
Last year I attempted a stash at the Highway 22 trailhead, but the jugs kept disappearing, very disappointing! Even moving the stash away from the trailhead itself didn’t help. I’ve tried again. West of the trailhead 3, 400 feet?, I’m no judge of distance, should be 4.5 gallons. Look for rock cairns, three rocks, two rocks, one rock with the one rock pointing in the direction of the cache. I’ve put out several, approaching from both east and west. Hope this works.
Dennis and I are local O.S. trail angels, our phone number is listed at both the Post Office and the store next door. It’s 530.335.7463. We have camping space, showers, laundry, phone, hot tub, DSL, and oh, yeah, food. We can also usually work out transportation help. Call us, we’d love to get to know you!
Regarding the new owners of the Hat Creek Resort and Store. They’re really nice people, John and Peggy. They want to be of any assistance they can. Showers will be n/c to PCTers, don’t know about laundry. The cafe is not open at this time, but Uncle Runts is. It’s roughly 4 miles east, and often a ride can be had both ways. Rumor is that for the rest of the summer, Runts will be open 7 days a week, three meals a day, but this is unconfirmed at this time. It has been closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
Now, a question…Hat Creek Resort is very close to the trail and there are an increasing number of trail bikes using back country roads and even the PCT. These are not motorized, but many trail bikers can be certifiably crazy. Is it legal for them to be on the trail? Can the Resort owners post sign saying no bikes of any kind and have someone in authority back them up? Thanks for any help anyone can give.
