In case of emergency

I’m hoping to hike the JMT southbound in August.

If there is an emergency back home and my family needs to get in touch with me while I’m on the trail, what would their options be? If I plan to stop at VVR and/or Muir Trail Ranch, presumably someone could leave me a message there. What about from MTR to Mt. Whitney? In an emergency, could someone get a message to me via a ranger station? (I have a close relative who is ill, and I’m worried about being incommunicado for that last week or so.)

Thanks!

hey susan…unfortunantly that stretch of the jmt between MTR and Whitney is considered the most desolate stretch of the pct. Desolate meaning fartherest away from town or ranger station. unless something has changed i think that for that 100miles you are effectively cut-off from communication. I know this prolly isnt good news but its all i got…good luck regardless! I dont know how big or expensiver they are but a Sat phone might work out there…Shine on!

Hi Susan,
You can rent a satellite phone (satphone) from Roadpost @ 888/290-1606 or www.roadpost.com. InTouch USA offers a wider range of satphones but at higher rates.

If you are willing to carry a cell phone, it is not uncommon to get a workable signal at the tops of passes. In that area you’ll probably be going over one every day (if you haven’t arranged an additional food drop between MTR and Whitney).
