In Dire Need of Advice

My brother decided he and I should go hike the Trail for four or five days next week. We’re both still fairly young and were Boy Scouts, but we haven’t hiked in awhile and will probably stick to 10-15 miles per day. But we really aren’t sure where the best place to go would be. Here’s what we’re hoping for:

  • Isolated/not often hiked areas
  • Pretty/scenic
  • Decent weather from June 2nd - June 7th
  • Cabins not necessary, we’ll be taking a tent

And that’s about it, I guess. We’re in Massachusetts, and he was thinking of maybe hiking New York (for no particular reason). Georgia or Virginia sound good to me, but if there’s something closer that’s just as nice, that’d be great.

So, what is your favorite spot?

Other questions:
-Are there places to refill water, or will we have to take a burner and find/sanitize our own?
-What sort of food should I consider taking?
-Are fires allowed?
-What are some light packing techniques that you know of, or do you have any helpful links?
-Any other random advice?

Thanks in advance.

If you only have 5 days then why not go hike all or most Massachusetts it will be easer to get to and back. I would take iodine if it was me and liptons works well.

I think Boy who wannders gave you some good advice. Mass is a nice state, got some great folks & decent scenery and it would be much easier for travel purposes etc. Va. is also good, but you’d spend time coming & going if you only have five days. I really enjoy the area from the Delaware Water Gap to Wawayanda in New Jersey also [believe it or not] Neew jersey is one of the “hidden secrets” of the whole a/t. Lots of scenery& wildlife galor ! Happy Trails!

well, as far as new england is concerned, you are going to run in to mad people unless you cruise way up to maine. all of the at is heavily used out here. but may i direct your attention to a very scenic, although popular, section of the AT right on the MA/CT border from rt 41 near salisbury CT, northbound over many nice mountains and a few waterfalls, a nice pond, and countless good views back down, 25 ish miles later to rt 41 in sheffield mass. section is fresh, dude.

If you’re looking for remote and little traveled, why not consider the Catskills or Adirondacks? It’s not the AT, but there is great hiking and plenty of opportunities for solitude.
