Inca Trail

Know this is about trails in US, but did hike part of Inca Trail in early 1983-84, (Peru, Cuzco and Ollaytaytambo)… looking for folks who might have done same.

Began hike outside of Ollaytaytambo at KM 88 first day, ended around Wayllabamba at around 10,000 ft (as i recall).

Had to turn back in morning due to partner’s heel spur. Bummer, still nice trip though, 1 week in Cuzco, getting the lungs in shape, seeing the Spainish city, Inca ruins, hanging with the town folk in “happening” international cafe. (French guys would ask their female partners to ask us if we had coke, seeing how we were “American”.) IOf course we weren’t that stupid.

Anyone with similar Inca Trail experince, would like to hear about it.

Never been on the Inca Trail, but one of the fun things I remember from Machu Pichu a couple years before you were there was how the kids would race like the devil straight down the the mountain as the tourist bus zig-zags down the switch backs. They would shout and wave hello at you again, and again as the bus would pass. They had a difficult time keeping up, but did. Hard not to part with a few coins as they would approach you at the bottom. I am sure they walked up a few times each day to repeat the process.

Had some good tea in Cusco, but passed on the rest.

Going through some of the villages past first ruins, children would run up and ask for Bon Bon’s, which we understood to be request for candy, couldn’t oblige them unfortuantely, a great country to hike in back then. Heard the insursuants fighting in the hill sides (shining Pass i.e., “Sendero Luninoso”) was just getting active back then.

The children were shouting “bon bons” which means “JACKASS” in the Peruvian language!

Actually, the offical language of Peru is Spanish, not Peruvian, in fact in that part of Peru, villagers would at that time be using an older Andean dialetc, known as “Quechua” with Spanish influence mixed in, Bon Bon, or Bonbon seems to indicate a rich chocholate candy treat.

Thank, for the rebrainer,

Just seems like there has been a good deal of bashing of new ideas, thoughts, etc, unncessary for folks that are not part of the “in crowd” who express an opinion oustside scope of ordinary.

Have hiked that part of trail, why demean it and the people who live on it when you have never been on it?
