i just completed the a.t. in october and my thirst for travel isn’t satisfied, so i’m off to india! i was wondering if anyone know anything about backpacking around the country and how much i would be spending on a 3 month trip?

I wouldn’t recomend hiking in india. From what I have seen here in the states, people from india are generally dishonest and more than willing to steal from those not of their race. I’ve never met a trustworthy indian. It would be a shame to be stuck on their homeland with nothing but a backpack. Plus you would probably face a lot of threats from all those nut-job towel head religions they follow over there.

I hear there are a few bumps in the terrain there that might be a little challenging.
If you don’t get the first-hand answers here, i’d try googling or looking in the back of Outside and Backpacker for Himalayan expeditions done by organized groups. (see their websites) Not that you have to go with a guide, but it would give you some ideas (along with a good map) of places to go and trekking possible itineraries.
I have THREE friends who have all independently decided to travel to India this year…seems like the place to be!

I am sure you can get a good up to date guide book. Try the Lonely Planet guides. If I remember right that was the one we liked best when we backpacked in Thailand. There probably are some blogs, try to google India backpacking…
Yup, I just tried and there looks like some good info for you. Here’s one. If it does not hyperlink, just copy and paste the URLs or do your own search.

Whoops, I cut it to try it instead of copying and forgot to put the link back.
