Info from this year's hikers

I would love certain suggestions from all who hiked this year. If you have heard tidbits from hikers not on the list, please speak up.

Aside from any info already in Yogi’s book – the gold standard – what surprises/changes did you find this year? Any specific problems with logistics and re-supply spots?

Places of usual interest:

How did you handle re-supply at Pines to Palm Hwy? Anyone send a box to Paradise Café?

Tehachapi vs Mojave? No more rides from Whites? How did you manage getting back to the trail?

How was V V R this year?

Was anyone at Tuolumne Meadows before the store/PO was open? How did you handle that?

Likewise, early-season and the shuttle at Reds Meadow? Running?

Best place to stay this year in South Lake Tahoe?

Any problems with pkgs at Burney Falls SP?

Hitching into Ashland? Skip it or try it?

What did you do regarding Olallie Lake? Are they still not accepting pkgs?

Which of several ways did you get from Manning to Seattle?

Thanks, Dr Bob

My opinions are based only on my personal experience so here goes…

Do not go into Chester, the hitch, both ways was very tough and not worth it, though there was a nice grocery in town

Last I checked the Paradise Cafe was not recieving packages, however if you can drop it by in person they’ll take it if you ask nicely. Instead, I pushed on 2 days to Idyllwild. It’s a fabulous town.

I sent a box to the Best Western at Cajon pass and skipped Wrightwood. It worked for me, they didn’t charge or expect me to stay. It also was right on trail. But everyone I’ve talked to had good experiences in Wrightwood too.

Go to the Saufley’s in Aqua Dulce! Just in case you were thinking of skipping it don’t. You’ll severly regret it if you pass up on this amazing place.

You can send packages to Hikertown, or the small store a mile down the road from it. Hikertown was a fine place to stay, but it definitely had an odd feel.

I went to Mojave and got what I needed. Except for the PO everything else is all in one spot. Very convenient. However, from what I heard the hitch to Tehachapi was much easier and the town was much more friendly. And there are no more rides from White’s motel, in fact they woudln’t even rent me a room. The hitch back was no problem.

Kennedy Meadows, put a very distinguishing mark on your box so you can find it in the sea of other boxes.

Independence to VVR. This leg took everyone anywhere from 1 -3 days longer than everyone expected. So gear up. The hike over Kearsarge may be a long side hike, but it’s very beautiful and I found the ressuply very needed.

From my personal experience do not go to VVR. Push one to one and a half more days to Red’s Meadows. I felt very taken advantage of at VVR. I also would have spent a heck of alot less had I used Muir Trail ranch. Pricing was inconsistant from one person to the next.

The shuttle from Red’s was very convenient with multiple runs per day and reasonable prices. Easy access too.

South Lake Tahoe, hit it on a weekday and stay near the Casinos, your prices will be in the low $30’s if you look around for it. Our hotel also had private beach access from which we watched sunset over lake tahoe. Very worth it. Good outfitter, Northface and Patagonia Stores as well.

No problems at Burney Falls except sometimes the store closes early on a given day.

Don’t get caught by Belden’s PO, it has odd hours and it’s not the niceset place to get stuck for the weekend.

I know people who hitched to Ashland but all I heard about was their headaches. Don’t use Callehans untill you call them, it burnt down this year. I hiked on to Hyatt lake resort. My experience there was AWESOME!! Very friendly, very laid back, I got a free shower and free camping at the resort. Only down fall, it’s a UPS only location though under the new owners that may change soon. Only a very small store, but the guy running it said he’s going to try and get some more hiker things for next year.

I just got off the trail and due to my late date everything was shut down at Stehekin. I hiked on to Rainy Pass and went into Winthrop. I am a big fan of this town. Yogi doesn’t mention it in her book but it’s a fun “Old West” town with full resupply. It’s a long hitch, but everyone going down the road is going there. Hitching was not a problem for me. Note that the PO is a mile out of town (and only open M-F) so when you get a hitch see if you can get all the way to the PO which is nearby a major grocery store, gas station, and hardware store. There is also a good upscale outfitter in town, don’t look for packs there but you’ll find just about everything else.

I found Greyhound from Manning to Vancouver very convenient and then from Vancouver you can choose Amtrak or Greyhound, it’s all in the same spot. I did hear of at least a dozen people successfully hitching the whole way too.

Oh, and make sure you have your Canadian paperwork in order before you leave on your hike, it will save you much headache.

If you have any other specific quesitons just let me know. Good luck to you on your hike, I wish I could do it all over again!!

Ladybird,

Terrific response. Thanks! Nothing like fresh info hot off the trail.

Good info on Winthrop. Hadn’t heard about it before.

Also, about Hyatt Lake. The last I heard (a couple years ago) the place was dying. This is encouraging. I stayed there in '90 and loved it. Nice caution about UPS there, also.

South Lake Tahoe. It seems that some of the old favorite hiker motels are in a stste of flux. What was the name of the place you stayed… and did you hear others rave about specific motels they used? If you don’t get it right in SLT, you can get shafted financially, esp on weekends! Any hikers you know of stay at places that gave them a ride back to the trail as the old motels used to do?

Thanks again for the grest info.

One consideration about Ashland: we are usually ‘buy as you go’ hikers, but in Oregon Ashland was the only real town we visited. Food at the resorts along the trail was really limited and very expensive. So we bought food in Ashland to send to the various places on the trail. Same with Cascade Locks for Washington. Also, there was a post fairly recently on pct-l that Callahans is open again.

Agree with the Chester answer from LB. That place was a waste of time, half way or not.
The town isnt hiker friendly, the motels arent hiker friendly, and most of the locals arent hiker friendly.
I got a ride from Bairds Mom, thank god the family was there, or I would have walked back out.

Look For Places other then the Yogi guide, true it has the basics but there are NUMEROUS other towns and resupply areas, some closer and cheaper then those listed, and some services and most prices have changed from the book.

How did you handle re-supply at Pines to Palm Hwy? Anyone send a box to Paradise Café?

I found it incredibly easy to resupply on route. You may go into towns more then you would otherwise, but you can buy on the way easily.
I didnt send, and as LB says P2P doesnt take packages anymroe, but they make a hell of a burger.

Tehachapi vs Mojave? No more rides from Whites? How did you manage getting back to the trail?

Mojave, to me was great, the Motel 6 was super cheap and they have a much needed and loved Pool, plus numerous eating places across the street.
Rides back were very tough from there for me.
I did have an Asian in a car stop and take my picture though…

How was V V R this year?
Went only in 2002 when I hiked the JMT. It was cool, but way way way to expensive.
It is easy to spend over $150 just on a trip in and out and three meals. Really. and not worth itexcept for the ‘experiance’ of saying you went. But that will difer with each hiker.
Most I talked with this year said they wouldnt go back because of the expense if they had a choice.

Was anyone at Tuolumne Meadows before the store/PO was open? How did you handle that?

That PO makes its own hours. Even at peak season.
They are helpful, but all it is is a window in a tent with a high school kid on summer job priogram running it.
even the guy bringing up the Mail was unhappy as he had to wait for somneone to show up in the middle of the day to drop off mail.
I was there with LadyBird…drinking in the rain!

Likewise, early-season and the shuttle at Reds Meadow? Running?
Shuttle is good, same with the service to Mammoth (Which is a great stop…everything you could want and need)

Best place to stay this year in South Lake Tahoe?
Right by the Casinos there are like three places that are about $30 plus tax…really.
The Super 9 or whatever wasnt taking hikers this year, and in fact they werent happy to see us when we showed up.
Walk a qaurter mile further and you will get cheap cheap hotels which is good because after the Casino buffet you will not want to have to walk very far, I promise you.
There is a free shuttle in Tahoe as well, then one that costs like a buck, rides out of TAHOE ARE INCREDILBY TOUGH to get.

Any problems with pkgs at Burney Falls SP?
Nope, nice folks, and this year they will have beer.

Hitching into Ashland? Skip it or try it?
Ashland ROCKED!
The Ashland Motel right in the middle of everything is about $5 a night, very nice people, rides were easy to get.

What did you do regarding Olallie Lake? Are they still not accepting pkgs?
Weather sucked through there, msot services were clsoed for me, but the ones there were nice enough.

Which of several ways did you get from Manning to Seattle?
I southbounded From Harts pass to the Border and Uturned it, so I ahev no answer here.
Things will change with the 07 season becasue of the MAJOR flooding damage in WA.
Keep your eye out, as I promise you there will be numerous roads inaccesible for most of the coming year after Spring.
Im still in WA…well, actually Portland waiting on a plane tomorrow, and the weather is still crazy.

good luck
