Information for support/trail angels

Hi. Does any one know if there is specific information/maps specifically for trail support folks?

For instance, if someone wanted to know where best to meet a hiker. Kind of like the AT has a lot of information about getting off the trail, mail drops, hotels/hostels, etc.

I have a patron who is asking. Our current resources are the Official AzT trail book and the topo maps. (Plus general trail maps not specific to the AzT.)

He also would like to know if there are any special considerations made for hikers of the trail in regard to permits (esp. in the Grand Canyon camp grounds).

He’s not connected so he is unable to go online and read this very helpful forum or journals and such to glean info. What he’s able to use will need to be something I can tell him or in map/pamphlet/book format.

Much thanks for any tips/thoughts/comments.

Data book is the best resource by far, it lists all nearby trail towns and “bail outs”. You can also find driving directions to trail heads on the aztrail website under the passagers section. The data book is available through a 30 dollar donation to the aztrail association.

Ditto the data book. There is also a new resupply guide free on the website (http://www.aztrail.org/resupply_042410.pdf). The ATA has a “gateway community” guide pamphlet they’ll send you if you ask.

The old guidebook (Tom Lorang Jones) is out of date for hiking, but the access information is still accurate and quite good for planning. It may be sufficient for your needs, especially in conjunction with the updated resupply guide.

Contact the Grand Canyon backcountry office for permit information. There was a change in their policy this year, but it sounds like it hasn’t affected thru hikers.

Good luck and have fun.

Thanks so much to you both, Garlic and Will, for your helpful information. See, I kept ‘planning’ to join the ATA, but never got around to it. I felt guilty, too, since I personally enjoy the trail so much. Well, no more putting it off! LOL!

Thanks!

We use the DeLorme road maps…they’re usually by state and show the major long distance trails. Great detailed info.

Thanks Tigger! I just bought DeLorme’s Az Atlas and Gazetteer. It is pretty nice. I didn’t look to see what else they offered though, so I’ll check them out more thoroughly!

Thanks,
