Hi, I wore some Roclite 318s on my 2009 Thru Hike. Being a firm believer in using what you have I started from Springer with a much used pair that had previously been used for months of "walking around town".

I was amazed at how well they held up. However, by the Shenadoahs they were on their last legs and so I ordered a new pair that I wore from Harpers Ferry.
The second pair were never quite as comfortable and the Pennsylvania Rocks were hard on them. They finally gave up the ghost at Stratton (the right upper seperating from the sole).
Overall I’m a fan - light weight, well constructed, hard wearing (although sole does wear when road/town walking).

I used gortex because it is what I had but (like many)I think non-gortex shoes may be better for the AT.
There are no perfect answers for footwear but I think Inov8 are worth considering. Sorry for the long winded answer.

									I use the innov8 flyrocs.

The roclites, mentioned above, have a shallower footbox and crush my toes when I wear a pack. (shows how personal foot choices can be!)

Flyrocs are light, roomy, fit like slippers, dry very fast

Downsides are durability, can’t do much road walking in them, and the mesh let’s in sand if you hike a lot on PCT style trails.
