I’m looking for temporary insurance for Thru hiking the AT in 2006, but temporary insurance isn’t available for NY or VT. What did people from VT or NY do for insurance while hiking the trail… HELP!

There are a number of on-line insurance companies that provide 6-month or other short-term medical insurance. Their monthly premiums are based upon the coverage you get and how large your deductible is. For example, I located some health insurance with a $1,000 deductible that costs around $180 per month.
This type of insurance is designed mainly in case you have a catastrophic illness or injury. Thus the high deductible.
Be cautious about who you buy insurance from. And make sure the policy that you are buying fits your needs. I don’t believe that your state of residency matters with these policies. However, if it does, check to see if you can list another state as your temporary residency during your hike. I would think that would be legal to do so.
