Interesting hike-Eastern Continental Trail

Heather (19) is hiking the Eastern Continental Trail and is currently on the Florida Trail. She’s looking to be the youngest person ever to hike the entire 5,192 miles. Her journal is very interesting and different to say the least … getting lost in The Big Cypress Preserve (by Alligator Alley)in Florida and having to wade out in sometimes up to waist deep water using a compass … by herself.

It seems like she really could use some trail magic. Track her current status on the Florida Trail Forum @ http://www.florida-trail.org/forum/ or her web site @

Her mom’s following in a broken down van (literally broken down now). Any type of trail magic would be appreciated I’m sure. She has a list of critical needs somewhere on her site.

I’m Mike Kennedy with the Alabama Hiking Trail Society. Rest assured that there are members who will be watching out for Heather and mom when they come to our wonderful state. Just ask Nimlewill Nomad, hiker trash extraordinaire (www.nimblewillnomad.com). We are an 18 month old organization with 176 members (and growing) who are working diligently to make the road walk portion of the ECT in our state a wilderness cooridor. Great strides have been made recently in securing rights to public land for this purpose. A 20 mile extension southward of the Pinhoti Trail (part of the ECT) should be a reality in a couple of years. For more info visit us at www.AlabamaTrail.org. We welcome all those interested, in state and out, who would like to share in this vision.
