I saw this article on SFgate and thought I’d share it.

It sounds like a trans-California trail from SF to Yosemite.

I had heard of this in passing before, but your post made me go do a little research. A fuller explanation can be found on the “A Trans-California Ramble” page on www.johnmuir.org. They have online there a synopsis of the idea behind it, the relevant passages from Muir’s various writings (as far as copyright allows), their own journals from the trail, and links to several news stories about the trip.

It’s a fascinating idea for me (being both a historian and a hiker) and it opens up some interesting ideas. Could this be a route that could be blazed and protected? Could it be linked with the John Muir Trail to lengthen it, or form a combination hike for those who want to try something longer than the JMT? Could this be done for other historic journeys that haven’t been explored or have been insufficiently explored? Seems like an exciting prospect to me.
