Supossed they started a trail forum and you could come up with any hiking topic you wanted. What is the number one topic?

sounds like your lonely. Don’t know what the #1 topic would be… seems like a lot of them have been beat to death over the years.

My burning question… WATER, do you swim, folick, soak your feet when you pass a great spot or not so great spot, or do you pass it by in exchange for more miles???:girl

I’ve been to McAfees Knob and the Mt. Rogers area and some balds in North Carolina. I’m just now starting to explore the Smokies and would love to do more hiking in SNP.

To make a long story short…what are the best views out there?..where can you camp and wake up to a sunrise or enjoy a sunset that makes you say this is it?

To be honest the views from the AT in the SNP aren’t all that plentiful. I do remember a few mornings when I did get a descent view in the morning… I think it was a rocky climb just north of Blackrock Hut?? I had breakfast up on a rocky piece of trail before Mary’s Rock/Skyline but I can’t remember the name of it… :girl HH

yhere are about 900 hiking miles in the smokies, it’s best to buy a guide from the visitor center and make your own trails. many areas offer great sunrises and sunsets. It will also show you the camping areas along the trails. good hiking.

Riga Lean-to in CT…great sunrise. Then climb up Bear Mtn. and down into Sages Ravine. Really a wonderful day on the AT!!!

I truley believe the best view I have ever had has to be at Silers Bald in GSMNP, Im not talking about the shelter, Im talking about the actual bald, and for the BEST sunset in the world there is a little trail to the northwest of the bald that will take you to an awesome cliff overlook.

Thanks hammock…I’ve been to the Silers Bald near Franklin NC twice and both times was socked in with bad weather. I’ll put that SMNP Silerslocation in my top five…what’s the Bunion place I’ve heard about in GSMNP?

of scenery and events!

I was making a steep climb during a thunderstorm complete with downpour. Suddenly I emerged from the forest canopy into a meadow between massifs spiraling out from the mountains on each side. Freshets crossed the trail emptying into rushing stream at the bottom of the meadow. Over the continental divide a rainbow appeared. In my mind I heard heard music that reminded me of the beginning of a Copeland symphony and words from Goethe’s Faust in German. Not the usual trail magic we talk about here, but magic nonetheless.

Everyone’s a Hero, just ask them, they’ll tell you.

Silers Bald near Franklin may be a different place than Hammock is talking about. If I rememeber correctly, there were two Silers Balds…and the one Hammock mentioned is the one in Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Correct me if I’m wrong, Hammock?

See, now Ponytail’s got it right.

I’ll leave it at that.

The thing speaks for itself.

The Whites - great sunsets and sunrises. Camping on the lakes in Maine - nice sunsets.

Bromley Mountain in VT had a good sunset
