So here’s the question (well two questions). is there anywhere around katahdin that my mom could hang out for a few days? and where is a good place for my mom to pick up my dad?

Depending on how much you intend to do with your Pops, Poppie is pretty much right. After Abol Bridge, as I recall, it’s about 30 miles to the next logging road or 40 to Jo-Mary Road which is a good access point. I have been in and out on that. I think you have to pay a small toll if you don’t have Maine plates. Somebody here probably remembers…:oh Have a great trip.

I seem to remember a dirt road near White house landing. Anybody know how driveable that one is?

Lady Di is on the mark as I was back in there last week. There is a road past JMR the crosses the trail about 25 miles south of Abol Bridge. Oh, and by the way the small toll is $12.00 per person for a 14 mile ride and an additional $20.00 after office hours. Get some Maine maps and you should be able to find a route if your Pops want’s to go farther, Cheers, POPPIE

Holy Smokes! $12 per person! Maybe we got “senior discounts”? Both times I went in was with Maine plates, but the last time was in '02.

I know that you can dayhike the whole thing, if you get the maps showing the logging road accesses. Of couse, the roads may be impassable, but you have no way of knowing that unless you can flag down a logger…

Please don’t bother to post about how that would be “spoiling” the wilderness experience. HYOH as they say.

Cheers,

:tongue

About 2 hours plus north east of Baxter you can be in Fredricton, New Brunswick. A nice small city that your Mom might enjoy. It is a pretty ride along the ST. John River to get there.

I think White House Landing is about 10 miles from Millinocket, at least that what I am remembering they said last year when I stopped in there.

Last year, my girlfriend joined me for the last 46 miles and was able to meet me at Whitehouse Landing via a shuttle. She was picked up outside of Millinocket by the owner’s wife for around $40. Give them a call and see if they would be willing to drive your Pops to Millinocket to meet your Mom. Good luck…
