Ed Gates, a super nice guy, started the CT today. As hot as it was today at Waterton Canyon, he should be snow free until Section 7 or 8. Hike on. Early starts should be okay this year.

Even with the higher temps/faster melt-off, the trees just west of Georgia Pass (Segment 6) may have some snow drifts. Hiked this segment last year on June 20 and post-holed through about 2 miles of snow in the trees. The tallest of the drifts were about 6-8 feet then. I wish Ed all the best for his hike!

Yikes. I leave this Friday to do sections 12-15. I wanted to do it in July, but just couldn’t do it then. I’ve been watching snow levels online just hoping that I won’t have to deal with a whole lot of snow where I’m going. Keeping fingers crossed…

Talia, I’m hiking parts of Segment 14 and 15 this Saturday. From what I’ve seen on the SNOTEL web site, there is little if any snow below 10,000 feet. Good luck to you!

Thank you, Bernard, good to hear. I am planning on doing some 14ers in the area as I pass through, if the snow levels comply. If not, well then I’ll just make the best of it!
