If you were hiking the AT in January, in Georia, with the shortest days, sleeping in shelters, what light source would you be using in the shelters during the several hours between darkness and sleep?

any simple headlamp will do just fine. some carry even some of those mini keychain lites that are more or less just .25oz i personally wouldn’t, but do use a wally world headlamp still have the one i used in 04, additional batteries required in 3 years
burn
LED headlamp and a candle or two is all you need. Some use tea candles, I like ones with a little more height.
Flame
Cut a small four inch square of stove wind screen and bend it in a shallow radius. Makes a great reflector and one candle will light the whole shelter. It also reflects the heat enough to warm your fingers while writing and is most cheery while you’re busy dying from cold. Paraffin candles last longer then bees wax.
Bushwhack
I like the candle idea. If you’re smart you can make it last longer and far cheaper than batteries, but keep a light for backup. I say take both, and see which you like best.
Also, I would do the reflector idea BW mentioned. Works for me. But I find aluminum fiol to work fine.
