Does anyone know if you can use a different fuel canister on the jet boil? REI wouldn’t ship the fuel and no REI close to me to purchase directly. Not alot of outfitters in west central Illinois.

Jetboil requires a threaded canister in order to join canister and stove together. I’ve used MSR and other canisters with Jetboil with no problems. Also got nailedonce trying to use an unthreaded canister - forget the brand.

Dave, a dozen or more companies sell the IsoButane or IsoPropane fuel canisters. They are available at almost any outdoor type store. The sell them in most of the larger Wal-marts. They are fairly easy to come by out on the trail. You can’t take them on airplanes at all.

The Jet Boil brand canisters (or any canisters of that type) have to shipped as Haz Mats and go ground only. I notice that Cabelas has a special pricing through 2/18, you may have to pay extra for the type of shipping which would probably be for most canisters. Good Luck (and have some extra Esbit tabs for backup.)

Last year I bought a case (24) of Snow Peak Giga Power 3.88 oz from Mountain Gear, Inc. They were shipped UPS Ground with no problem, but they did arrive with a Hazardous Materials tag on them.

You’d think it would be cheaper, as the cheapest shipping method is usually the slowest, which would logically be a ground shipping vs air transport.

So any threaded canister will work on the jet boil? No BOOM! I don’t want the neighbors thinking I had to supplemented my income with an at home Meth Lab!
Francis…I am on the Amtrak to WV so no planes on this trip. I just want to buy a couple little cans to start the path.

Dave, just to be sure. Google up “Isobutane fuel canister”
You should see photos of what they look like. It is sometimes labeled as isopropane. What it is not is, Propane tank,(they have threds too. Just for fun, you should know that last year on one of my trips to the AT I flew into Albany NY, I took a bus to a sporting goods store for fuel then got on a amtrak train. The Department of Homeland Security was searching bags and sure as crap they pulled out that fuel canister and said, did you read the lists to things you can’t bring on a train? 1 small jetboil canister. They did let me continue on with it so it turned out ok. Just thought I would share that…
