JMT Map-Pack? - John Muir Trail

Has anyone used the “JMT Map Pack” I see advertised online? http://www.mapsworldwide.com/map_10941.htm

Are they good? I quite like having a proper, waterproof paper topo map for planning and doing a hike - just wonder which maps people have used in the past, and their experiences with these.

Thanks!

I’ve used them, and they are very good. They won’t always give you what you are looking for if you are trying to identify a distant peak, but they provide excellent, easy to read coverage of the trail itself and the immediate surroundings.

A new posting of JMT maps has been put up recently. Peter, the author, used the National Geographic TOPO! series to create these maps. He downloaded the .tpo file from the Map Exchange. This file was posted by Dan Braun, Founder of Southern Yosemite Mountain Guides. All map notations are from that file and not check by me, yet! The maps are formatted to fit on a regular size piece of paper. The full size map image is larger, so you can scale to map to larger sizes.

There is one 500k overview map. Then a series of 5, 100k Maps, followed by18, 7.5’ maps. All formatted to fit neatly on a 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.
They are slightly reduced from the original size to do this and can beprinted to larger formats if needed.

They show the larger area. There is also a downloadable zip file if you want the whole set.

BTW-I was was trying to remember the passes southbound. I use the following Mnmonic memory jogger. Maybe you have one better.

Cathy danced in silver slippers;Mother made papa go for some wine. This gets you the list of main passes, Cathedral, Donahue, Island, Silver, Selden, Muir, Mather, Pinchot, Glen, Forester, Shepherd and finally Whitney. It works for me even though I leave out a few of the lesser ones.

The Harrison map pack for the JMT are the best out there. Ive used them on three JMT hikes and the high quality waterproof maps are still in good shape even after 600+ miles in my pack. They even have milages for the trail which is nice. they are really all you need for the JMT.

The Harrison maps are sufficient for hiking the JMT, they are lightweight, waterproof and well detailed. Unless you need to iddentify distant peaks, they would be all I would take.
