I purchased the guide book and map set and did not find either very helpful. The guide book went into great detail about all the pretty flowers but not enough on land marks and the trail itself. The map set I found to be too small and did not cover the surronding area enough. My brother loved the map set however. I also purchased a set of topo maps from National Geographic that I thought were awesome but my brother hated.

Harrison Map set is what I’ve used on all 3 of my JMT hikes. I’d recommend the book, John Muir Trail: The essential guide to hiking America’s most famous trail by Elizabeth Wenk, if this is your first JMT hike. I used it during my first hike and found it valuable. Not so much if you do the trail multiple times.

It would be hard to get lost on the JMT, signage frequent. I just used the Map Pack, and didn’t relly need them. The mileage on them may be underestimated at times. did not use any kind of datat book, no need.

Just use the Tom Harrison, maps. JMT is way easy to follow, impossible to get lost on, excellent signage. Horses destroy the trail tread and make six parrellel trails in spots, so its easy to follow. Just follow the horse poop basically. Seriouslly irresponsible people use horses on trails, i hate them,
