JMT Permits - 2011

I have two friends that want to join me on the JMT but do not have a permit and for the trailhead we are leaving from (Lyell Canyon on Monday August 1st) and the resevations are all gone. They are traveling a long ways to join us and I was wondering what the chances are of getting a walk-in permit for that day and location or another location for that day where they would be able to meet up with us somewhere on the trail. If you are hiking from one of the side trails like fron VVR or Reds Meadow do you need a permit? Can you get one from Yosemite or do you have to be at the specific trailhead?

There are 16 walk in permits available for Lyell plus those permits left over from no shows. I haven’t personally done it but know those who have without difficulty. And there are other trailhead options.
You need a wilderness permit for overnight stays no matter where you enter. Entry permits might not be a problem but a permit to exit at Trail Crest (Whitney) might. If you have an extra day you should have no problem scoring a walk in permit. You can’t get a permit for entry somewhere outside of Yosemite for entry in another jurisdiction (Inyo, SEKI) as far as I know. Lots of permit talk can be found here in the archives or join the group and ask the question:

Contact Inyo National Forrest and book a reservation for Cottonwood Lakes as a entry even if you are entering from a different area the exiting will still be the same…I don have their phone number on hand but they are listed on the web…You have to have both the entry and the exiting of you trip plus the dates. Make sure you make some overkill on your exiting date so you don’t have to sweat your schedule…take care..rebosize@Gmail.com
