We are having trouble getting our permits to hike the JMT. Does anyone know where we need to go to purchase them when we get to CA? We tried to purchase them by phone and online but they are booked until August. They said we can walk in and hope to get them. Was wondering where to go and how early we need to be there.

If you are hiking SOBO, go to the Yosemite Ranger Office to get a walkup permit. Get there early as it's hit or miss if there will be any available.

If hiking NOBO, go to the Lone Pine Ranger Office.

There are two types of walk up permits. Each trailhead has a few held for walk in hikers. You have to get there at the break of dawn in order to get in line at the ranger station in the hopes of getting them. Then there are the no shows which are generally given out at around 11 each day. Go to the ranger station late in the afternoon of the day prior to your hike and ask to be put on the list for the next days no show permits. Then when you are in line waiting for the held permits you will have two shots at getting a permit. The rangers in Yosemite were not very helpful in this regard and gave us all sorts of run around and wrong information about the process. We then when to Toulomne Meadows where they were much nicer and knowledgable. We missed the Yosemite Valley section which sucked but were able to start at Lyell Canyon which eliminated a big climb right off the bat and gave us a day of hiking the nearly flat and beautiful Lyell Canton to start our hike.

We ended up starting at Sunrise trailhead instead of Happy Isle because all the permits were taken for Happy Isle. You miss a little bit of trail, but it is still a great hike! Enjoy, this is the best trail I ever hiked!

60 year old experienced backpacker and hiker in good health and condition looking for a partner to hike the JMT south out of Reds Meadow in August/September. Am based in San Diego. Have hiked the Yosemite section out of the Valley and over Donahue Pass. Leaving from Reds [Mammoth Lakes] is easier permit-wise and logistically too -IMHO and less crowded as well.
