Journal Recommendations

Any particularly captivating journals on line this year? There are so many to choose from, and I have not found “that one” just yet this year. Recommendations? Also, what is the deal with JAWS? Seems there has not been a post in weeks. Still hiking? Advise

Break-a-leg’s journal is entertaining. Especially the commentary from her transcriber.

Cuppa Joe’s is a good read also.

Saw Jaws as he was restarting the trail in early March. He was traveling with a couple of older women, haven’t heard anything since, and didn’t see his name in any registers from Hawk to Neel’s Gap when I was out for 3 days in the middle of March. Don’t know what’s up.

Jaws quit the trail a few weeks ago.

I was checking out Bhudda’s CDT journal yesterday. She has a refreshing style with her photos and writing.

Not your average hiker -experienced, grounded, and pure.

The most refreshing journal personality this year is “Dandylion”, a 19 year old from Britain. Just started on the trail, he has posted some remarkable entries despite his mangling the King’s English. His grammar and spelling is part of the enjoyment and charm of his entries that will remind some of Mark Twain. In one entry, he talks about learning the history of trail. He concludes with a quote: ‘Not knowing the history of behind the Appalachian Trail is like a leaf that doesnt realise its part of a tree’ His journal makes for good reading and you will enjoy his sense of humor. I am not sure he knows what a good writer he is. Enjoy.

Best journalist so far for me as I think about section hiking over several years is Bumpo. He is a great writer. His return this year is up in the air.

I sure was enjoying Jaws until he went silent.

The very best journal posted on the Internet is “Then the Hail Came.” Some of best trail descriptions you will ever read. If you aspire to write well, take lessons from this older but sill interesting journal.

I agree with Ambler - break’s journal is very entertaining. She is hiking with Cuppa Joe and Scholar, and it is interesting to compare the 3 styles and viewpoints.

I like Dandylion as well - 'course, I am kinda partial to yappy’s journal, too  O! and moosie’s entry of April 2nd is not to be missed!!

I have to reinterate Clark Fork’s comment that “Then the Hail Came” is the best journal on the net. I enjoyed it so much I printed it out and have read it several times. As for this years crop I have enjoyed reading Feather’s journal and Scholar is a fine writer.

JAWS got off the trail at Neels Gap, heading, I think, for Asheville, NC.

This journal cracked me up.

You have to scroll down to 2003.

Those written by Jan LiteShoe are really worthwhile, too. She did the Long Trail first and then a Thru. :tongue

When I was getting started about thinking about the AT I found this site and read the journal of someone who had never Backpacked before hitting the Trail. Big Red wrote well and was inspiring. He hiked in 2002. See: http://trailjournals.com/bigred
