Hello friends of Denise. I am Susan DeLisle, Denise’s sister. I am afraid that I am writing to tell you of terrible news – Denise died at her home on Wed. 3/27/02 of a pulmonary emoblism. I am typing you this from a computer at Kinko’s because my parent’s computer is not working well. I wanted to let those of you who knew Denise that she will not be making the AT journey afterall. Her family is currently in San Jose, CA and making arrangements to go to the Seattle area. Some tome in early May, my parents will travel to my home in Atlanta and we plan to go the the AT trail head in Georgia and have a small commommoration and “get Denise started on the trail”. Please contact me via email – quepasamac@aol.com or by phone; Atlanta - 404-255-8366. I would love to talk with you if you would like to know more or want to go to the trailhead with the family in May.

There is not one of us out there who has done the trail, dreamed of doing the trail, and even followed someone on the the trail via an online journal who does not understand the love and devotion Journey had and were wishing her Gods Speed. I read her enteries and she seemed so joyful and looking forward to her thru-hike.

I thank her family for honoring her devotion to the trail and I for one will seek to see if I can join them on Springer to help them say good bye.

I send them my deepest sympathy for their loss. May God be with them and hold them up through these difficult times.

I am Jim Deane, Rebel with a Cause !! I was also supposed to start on April 13th at Springer Mt. I will definitely say a few words and carry her spirit with me on the trip. She can see the trail through my eyes. God Bless and keep each of you in her family. Im sure she will guide me well.

I would like to honor Journey’s memory by making a gift in her name to the ATC, but I don’t see an option for doing that sort of thing on their website. Does anyone know about this or have an idea for a more appropriate gift that could be made in Journey’s name and would benefit the AT?

Deepest sympathy to her family and God bless you, Rebel, for hiking in her name…I think that’s a beautiful tribute.

Mele, on another site I saw an address to send a donation to the ATC in her name. I will look for it and send it on to you.

Denise was an avivd visitor to the Women Hikers Website. We laughed and shared a lot together. Our site is working on a brick in Damascus Pathway for her. Some of us women that are actually thru0hiking this year have decided to enter her name in the shelter registers as a memorial. I will be covering the Northern VA-PA-NJ-NY-CT-NH-ME sections. Below is the sticker I will be placing in her stead:
Denise DeLisle – “Journey”

This wonderful lady’s thru-hike adventure was to begin at
Springer Mt, Ga on April 13, 2002.
Unfortunately an adventure of a greater magnitude was in the plans for her and she passed away very suddenly on
March 27, 2002. I enter her name in this register in
her memory. Let it be known that she is traveling the
trail in the hearts of many of her hiking sisters and
members of the Women Hiker Website.
