July weather in Smokies

I’m thinking about hiking the Fontana to Newfound Gap section (maybe all the way to Davenport Gap) starting July 1st. It’s the only chance I will have until the week of Christmas and New Years and I’d like to be thru the Smokies by then so that I can do the Davenport Gap to Hot Springs (and maybe farther) this winter.

How hot is it usually in the Smokies during the first week of July? Lots of bugs? Water sources…etc. Any info would be helpful

Most of this trail is 4 to 5 thousand feet. On a normal Summer you could expect highs about 75 or 80’s with low’s in the 50’s. Afternoon thunderstorms are likely. Even if June turns out to be a dry month there will be more water to drink in this area than anywhere on the AT South of Maine. Bugs are never much of a problem in the Smokies.
