June 1st Sobo Kickoff

I am wondering how many people are thinking about a June 1st Sobo?

Though a Nobo PCT hike normally holds many advantages upon A Sobo hike, this year seems to be the exception, mainly because of high chance of the northwest forests being closed in summer to hikers due to the drought induced fire hasard.

I wasn’t initaly planing to do a PCT thruhike this year, as I can leave Israel only in the end of May, and hiking Sobo is normaly a very lonly exprience, due to fact that the few Sobo hikers don’t normaly start together, but this year might be differnt.

If we can orgenize some kind of kickoff around June 1st at manning, more people might start south together, and therfore we won’t have to hike alone, and miss the social part of a thruhike, which in my opinion, is a very big part of the thruhiking expreince.

How many people are considering hiking south this year starting June 1st?
What do you think about the Kickoff Idea?

I’ll still have a week before leaving for summer vacation, so would most likely show up to such a thing. However, June 1 is a Wed. June 3-5 is the weekend, which might be more convenient for people.

My wife April and I are considering going southbound, but we probably won’t commit for another month or so. (We couldn’t start northbound until May 7 anyway, due to a work commitment.) I’m not sure we would schedule around a kickoff, but we’d at least provide some company on the trail…

I have thrown around the idea of a PCT thru hike this year, but cannot leave until the 1st of June. What are the Northern Cascades like in early June? I would definitely attend such a gathering if Rain Queen and I decide to hike this year.

I have been very interested in going sb ( i live in Oregon and know full well what the rivers look like… even now - a paltry flow- scary )though when i mentioned the logic of a sb trip with my partners - it meets with resitance. I do not want to hike sb alone. Wish there were more people going that way too - it really seems to make more sense.
Glad you are going again this year!
see you out there?

I’ve already booked a flight, and I should be in Seattle on June 1st.
Therfore, weather permiting, I will start south in Manning around June 1st or 2nd, and will hope to have as many other hikers around as possible.

Right now I’m planing only a hike to the sisters area in Oregon (though I might continue on hiking south).

I too, am consideriing a SoBo, and have posted a similar request at PCTL. It would be nice to know just how many SoBos there will be this year. Im gonna book my flight for the end of May to either Seattle or LA (for a start in Agua Dulce) in the next couple of weeks, or just hold off to the last minute and take a train cross country. At last that way I’ll have a much better idea of the snow conditions in both Wash and the Sierra.

If you’re feeling donw and don’t feel like hiking, just take a trip to your local mall during spring break…and you’ll want to hike real soon.

If you can’t start In Campo at the Kick-off, there is very little point in starting in Agua-Dulce. The section from A.D. to Kennedy Medows, is my least favorite section in all of the trail, as its the driest, hottest and most arid.
Starting from Campo and skipping the section from A.D. to K.M. makes much more sense, though a late May start will be very problematic due to the fact that trail angels don’t normaly maintain the water caches this late in the season. In both cases you will loos the sense of a continuous hike from Mexico to Canada. If you can only start in the end of May, a Sobo hike makes more sense, especialy this year, with the relativly high amount of potential Sobo’s.
