Just finished a few days around the McAfee Knob area…it was my first time there and wow!!! It was a little hot and hazy but the view was extraordinary!! For those hiking in this area just a heads up…this part of Virginia is undergoing a serious drought…the only water source within about 15 miles is at Catawba Shelter…about 1.5 miles from McAfee…of course Va. Rt. 311 is only a few miles away and Catawba a few miles down the road has a grocery store. I ran into a few section hikers…most just passing how are ya’s…I was trying to hook up with Spiderman who has a journal on this forum…I think I missed him by only a day…many thru-hikers stayed at the hostel nearby so I didn’t see many them at any of the shelters. All in all great weather and not even cold at night…a wonderful time of the year to visit this area. Catawba is a great shelter with water and places to pitch a tent nearby…some of the places like McAfee don’t allow camping. Later,Doc.
