You should always make sure the filter is empty of H20 at night. If it’s freezing, the water turning to ice will expand and bust the filter.

Good point Advisor. On really cold nights I sleep with my filter in my bag if I plan on filtering in the morning.

I’m not familiar with the Base Camp model. Among thru-hikes that filter, most carry the Hiker or pro-hiker model. Cartridges last about 2 months before the funk builds up inside. Katadyn guarantees their cartridges for a year, so you can exchange cartridges at most any outfitter along the AT when the time comes. No need to buy replacement cartridges.

Just bummed into it the other day at REI. Although the packaging says it’s 15 oz. the website says 1 lb. 3 or 4 ounces. Just add water and I suppose its even heavier. But the flow rate and design seem good. Flow rate is adjustable - Without dirty water you can get 2 liters a minute and 1 liter in normal position. Anyone have real life knowledge on this. I’ve thru-hiked with the MSR Miniworks and it was fine (definitely 17 or 18 ounces once you use it) and a second thru-hike with the MSR Sweetwater (11 ounces, maybe 12 or so once used). Even though the Sweetwater had those two annoying hoses to manage (but you get used to it), its true 1+ liter flow rate was great. Lighter and faster and cleanable and cartriges easily found along the AT…It was a good choice. As far as freezing, do all your water pumping at the end of day at camp for dinner, drinking through the night, breakfast needs and still having 2 liters to hit the trail quick and easy in the morning. If you store it in its bag and down in your pack, that will insulate it enough except for the harshest conditions of the AT. I’ve never had a issue with the two filters mentioned in 5000 miles. Try changing your strategy as to when you filter. -Anywho, the new Vario Katadyn seems fast, but not necessarily light. (2 cents)-Postcard
