For those who went sobo, where did you stay in Baxter, and in how far advance did you reserve?

We sobo’d in '04 starting 6/24 and only made reservations maybe 3-4 weeks in advance. We ended up not using them and hiked on to Abol Bridge Family Campground where we got hot showers;) It was a long day though!

I made reservations a week and a half prior to my SOBO start (7/28/05) and was lucky to have slipped in. I’d definitely recomend calling 3 weeks prior and staying there as opposed to hiking on after going up Katahdin. You’ll want to savor that first day and the campground is quality.

baxter has a new reservation system. 2006 is year two of a two year trial. it is a rolling reservation system, similar to getting a permit in yosemite. you have to mail your reservation form four months in advance to the day of the desired reservation. check it out here.

The “four month” rolling reservation system is doing June 16th today.
If you do stay at KSC I recommend getting a lean-to and staying two nights.
Also, there’s a 10 day in advance by-phone with credit card option. You can try to call that late to find openings within the Park - but don’t count on getting exactly what you want!
