How does one know how far they have hiked each day? Guidebooks?

You use guide books to know the distance from point A to point B,but you also become use to knowing how far you can travel by time. As in 2 miles an hour

I’d use either the AT Data Book or Wingfoot’s Handbook to keep track of milage.

Or you can use the Appalachian Trail Thru-Hikers Companion published by the ATC. The 2006 edition shows mileages from both directions but the directory is written from south to north.
