My wife and I purchased Down Bags for our trip in March and she is planning on useing a water repellent
that you wash the bag in. Have any of you heard of this? and does it work?

Sure. There are several types of wash in product but honestly you won’t need it. The typical problem you may encounter is not from water from the outside but from perspiration from the inside. If you use shelters mostly there will be some blown snow in the shelter now and then and some wind blown rain. All we did was cover the bottom of our bags with our tent fly or moved to the back wall of the shelter. Usually when you have a down bag you want to open it up and let it dry some when the weather permits and lay it out in town on a bed or in the sun on a picnic table. Make sure you trash bag it when it’s in your pack and have a tight pack cover. I wouldn’t worry about washing in something since you risk damaging the bag in the wash, baffles can tear from the weight of the water. and the wash in may cut down on the loft. Sweeper, you have anything to add?

Yes I believe you talked me into talking Jen out of it.
Id hate to mess up a brand new down and it sounds unnessasary anyway. Thanks

Sounds like the best choice. As far as keeping it clean. Rinse of when you can, wash the mud of your legs and wear your camp set of clothes to bed. We had very little stink. In fact they don’t stink even after the trip but we were rather extreme about being clean. We saw some hikers just crawl in all mud covered…day after day. Ick.

I washed my down bag after much use .I put the wash cyle on delicate &dried it on low heat with a couple tennis shoes ,It turned out looking just like new. I made a silk liner for this year and hope this will help keep it cleaner longer. I do use a spray type water repellent on it which I repeat occasionaly. Happy hiking
