Sky Rider,

I live 4 miles from Keyes Gap and to my knowledge there hasn’t been any vandalism there for the past two years. I am aware of previous vandalism and have been watching the paper etc. Unfortunately, during the week a number of commuters are parking their cars there. The house that was next door to the parking lot has been torn down.

Hey Footnotes: Thanks for that info; even though I have moved to Maryland, I’m not far away and I love that section, so I appreciate that info. I had been afraid of parking my car there since hearing of vandalism that had occurred there.

Not sure how Keys Gap fits into your hiking plans, but there are a couple of alternatives.

South of Keys Gap, you could park near–but since parking space is at a premium not directly at–Blackburn Center. The road that goes up to Blackburn has several small parking pull-offs. There is an easy blue-blaze from Blackburn up to the A.T. Your Northern VA A.T. map (PATC’s) will show the roads you take to get to Blackburn.

North of Keys Gap, you could park at or near Harpers Ferry. On weekends, I’ve parked at the far end of the Amtrak station lot right in town (weekdays it’s for commuters, and on weekends get there early before the tourists). Other HF possibilities are at the college near ATC HQ (but ATC itself has very limited parking for staff and visitors so you don’t want to park there), or even the HF Visitors Center up on the highway (fee includes a shuttle bus to HF).
