L.A. Hiking - Pacific Crest Trail

#1

Hi,

I have recently attended a convention and won a 5 day all inclusive trip to Hollywood.
I am not that bothered about visiting L.A. and wish to spend my time hiking.
Can anybody please give me details of good day hikes in that region that will incorporate the PCT.
I will be hiring a car so access to trailheads shouldnt be an issue.
Thanks
Mike

What time of the year are you talking about? If you stay in Southern California and it is during the summer (hot) months, you have to stay in the tallest mountain areas. San Gorgonio (11500ft) Wilderness is out since the PCT passes next to it (not through it). However, San Jacinto Wilderness and San Jacinto State Park offer several nice day hikes in an alpine setting and has the PCT passing through it.

If you are staying in Hollywood and don’t want to drive long distances, then you need to look into the Angeles National Forest or the Santa Monica Mountains. The higher elevation areas of the Angeles national Forest are serviced by the Angeles Crest Highway(2) and the Angeles Forest Highway. The Santa Monica Mountains (a costal chain) is serviced by the 101 or PCH(pacific coast highway).

Its been pretty hot as of late but I would check out the Backbone Trail along (near) the ocean. Great parking at the trail head, google it. The closest and cooler section of the PCT would be in Wrightwood or Big Bear. If you go on the Backbone e-mail me and let me know how it was, thanks and enjoy. Walking along the beach is pretty cool too.

if you are looking for a PCT-centric trip you could coordinate a visit with donna and jeff saufley (agua dulce) and do some hiking around the vasquez rocks area and in the desert north of there; it’s not far at all from LA to agua dulce distance-wise but destination-wise agua dulce is about as different from LA as you could get

Its less than a 3 1/2 hour drive from LAX to Lone Pine.

Horseshoe Meadow, Whitney Portal, Onion Valley. Multiple options from each.

You’ll need a permit for overnights. Easy to obtain from the visitor center in Lone Pine (turn right on the road to Death Valley just south of LP).

I was in a similar situation. I flew into Long Beach at the end of September for business in San Diego. I had three days off, so I knew that Horseshoe Meadows was too far.

I chose Mt. San Jacinto State Park. There are so many trails with so many options. The park staff sent me maps and were very helpful getting me permits and information.

The temps were perfect and the scenery was incredible. Water was available. The only drawback for me was hiking above 9000 ft. My body did not have time to adjust to the altitude. I am used to hiking in the southeast where that is not an issue.
