anyone know the largest elevation gain and fall in a day’s hike on pct?

If you start at the base of the valley below Forester Pass - you’re looking at 5000’+ of elevation gain. Of course, if you do big miles, you could be looking at considerably more elevation gain than that.

I believe the climb out of Dunsmuir/Castella in N. Cali is over 6,000 ft of elevation gain.
If you are traveling southbound, the climb from I-10 to San Jacinto is over 6,000 ft also.
Some folks tackle Pinchot and Mather in one day, that is a lot of elevation gain and loss also.

What about those crazy mo fo’s who trek from Death Valley to the top of Whitney, now thats some elevation gain. Anyone know about the race they hold? I’ve only heard it as legend.

Of course, how much elevation you may gain/lose in a day on the trail will depend upon how much ground you cover. Scott Williamson has spoken of gaining 9,000’ in a day (cumulative). I’m not sure where, though.

I think the climb coming out of the Whitewater River is something on the order of 7000 feet. Of course, it is spread out over a lot of miles (15?) and isn’t that tough, just depressing.

On how long a day is for the hiker
This August I ran into the Yo-yoer guy near Snoqualmie Pass, and he was close to running. I am sure he is doing huge miles and huge gains every day.
For me, 19 miles is tops for a day! A lot of time it isn’t elevation in one section, but having to do an up and down a number of times in a day. On one of our section hikes this summer, that 19 mile day had 4 ridges to go up and down. I’d rather had it all in one up

For what it’s worth, we did 7500ft and then 8200ft cumulative ascents on consecutive days in the closed section of the PCT around Glacier Peak a week or so ago. These were the highest on the trail for us this year. And the reroute is even steeper!

I can’t remember the atlitudes off the top of my head, but the descent from the 9,000 ft. San Jacinto to San Gregornio Pass is something like a 8,000 ft. drop in 16 miles.
