My (delayed) hike may put me in the segments between Silverton and Durango the first week of September. I’ve had two folks comment ‘that’s pretty late!’… Comments? (Snowstorms? Cold fronts?)

That time should be fine. In fact you might see some early colors. I consider the third week of September to be ideal for the fall colors hike.

I think you will be fine, cold up high but you should be fine. Have a light coat for nights. Montbell UL Down should be just fine for nights, the days will be so beautiful

Beautiful time to hike! Did the same section myself last year over Labor Day. Everyone above is right. May be hot, may be cold, may be just right … Prepare for it all, worry about none of it.
