Are all the ATC maps updated every year? No, they generally get updated every 6 to 8 years. Every year, one or two of the eleven guidebooks and maps gets updated. Depending on the changes that occur, there may be a correction sheet inserted in the guidebook when you buy them.
Are there better maps out there? Well, it depends on what you are looking for. Certainly USGS maps give more detail, but they are usually further out of date than the ATC maps are. So, I wouldn’t use them for hiking.
But, when in the White Mountains, I carried the AMC maps as well. And in Maine, I carried the map from the AMC Maine Mountain Guide. Both maps covered a larger area than the ATC maps do. However, for just hiking the AT, the AT maps do just fine.
I haven’t bought the ATC maps on CD. Maybe they are better. I did buy the CD Topo for New Hampshire, and realized that it is not updated.
