Does anyone remember those caterpillars up in NY that were/are eating the hardwood leaves like oak in the summer. 'Pillar poo raining on your head. Not tent caterpillars, it was some thing else but the name dudes me. Leafcutters?

Yeah, we call the tent caterpillars back east. You think its those? I don’t remember them raining leaf bits from the sky tho. The reason I ask if anyone knows is across the street the oaks are getting stripped by something and from what I remember the Gypsys had little taste for hard wood. Maybe now that they’ve eaten everything else they’re now on the menu. Don’t see any nest tho.

I venture to say that what you are seeing are Gypsy Moth caterpillars. They love oak leaves. You won’t see a nest, but you should see a lot of tan fuzzy masses on the trees after the moths lay their eggs. If I recall correctly, the caterpillars have red dots–2x2 on their backs.
