Learning ice axe technique?

I’ve never used an ice axe and only felt a need for one once. But I’d like to expand where I can go by getting one.

Besides taking a class, how have you learned self-arrest technique? Did someone on the trail demonstrate it for you, did you just try it out, or did you carry one without practicing at all?

Thanks for any info on this.

Just go to a steep snowfield, start sliding down and see what happens. The steeper the better as you’ll get better practice that way. You’ll be fine!

KIDDING!! Don’t sue me!

Basic self arrest isn’t hard. I learned what I needed to know semi-formally with a group in only about 3 hours or so. Surely there’s a number of books that have all the info and maybe you could take that to a safe, non-exposed place to practice but there’s no substitute for working with someone who knows, and who can actually show you proper technique and watch your technique as you learn. Do you know anybody like that? Maybe you could go to a local outfitter and find someone to pay for a few hours of instruction. It might cost $50-75 or so (?) but I think that after that you’d be pretty set. That might be the cheapest way to do it right if you don’t already know somebody. Good luck!

We learned from a book: Freedom of the Hills. then we went out and practiced. You pick it up pretty fast glissading. It’s really basic. The hardest part is not tearing up your clothes. A sheath for the head is a very good idea while storing it on your pack…

Thanks for the quick replies… and good ideas. I think I’ll skip a formal class and use the money for the axe. Happy Trails
