I’ll be heading up to Bangor airport in Maine by the end of this week in order to start my Sobo thru-hike. How should I get from the airport to katahdin?

How cold is it in Maine right now? I know the temperatures are fairly low compared to where I am in NC right now, but I’m looking for, “bring thermal underwear and waterproof boots” or “light clothing is fine, your shoes will dry” type advice.
thanks

Bring some long underwear, it’s not supercold now but it was a few weeks ago and it can change again. Your shoes can get wet at any time so it depends on if you’re comfortable hiking with wet feet or not. As long as you keep hiking your feet should stay warm even if they do get wet.
Apple Pie
Thanks Apple Pie, that’s exactly the kind of info I’m looking for!
I’m going with:
-salomon quick-dry running shirt/shorts
-brooks winter running pants and a brooks long sleeve shirt
-army issue black polyester top/bottom(spear suit)
-solomon shell top and sierra designs shell bottoms for wet weather
I’m okay with wet feet, I’m a Hash House Harrier and Army SOF Vet.
Thanks again

It has been getting down into the low 40s, upper 30s at night now in southern NH. Daytime has been beautiful 60s and 70s. Perfect hiking weather but at this time of the year it can and will change dramatically at a moments notice. You should be fine through most of Maine but coming through the Whites in October may get downright ccccold at times. On the plus side you will be walking through the peak foliage, no bugs and beautiful crystal clear skys. Be prepared for anything and have a wonderful hike.

I’m a native New Englander, and most recently have been living in the Whites. Your heading towards an awsome time of year ME>NH>VT. Gonna be chilly at night for sure, and you have a pretty good chance of catching some snow. Deffinately keep your eye on the weather, It can change in a minute, but the mount washington observatory keep a close eye, and will issue warnings. If they do, then you should listen :]
Safe travels, I leave Spring arounf New years eve, and hopefully we cross paths!!

I’ve been out in similar weather to this I think, so I should have a decent time. I’ll look out for bad weather, thanks.
If you’re leaving around New Years eve I don’t think we’ll cross I’m planning on doing more fastpacking than hiking and my goal is to finish in less than 3 months(I’m best man at a wedding sometime in November too, ha).
I’m currently emptying my house of all but what’s going in my pack… should be gone this weekend I think.
