No, the Mt Leconte shelter still has the cage in the front. It is due to be updated sometime this summer. I find this not a worry as I have never seen a bear up there, however there are still lots of deer there in the mornings. Last time I went I counted about 15 deer standing around as we woke up. If you are looking for a cageless shelter, try out the IceWater Springs shelter just off the Boulavard Trail on the AT. It is brand new and a great example of whats yet to come. Here is a link to the IceWater Springs Shelter picture:

Is Icewater Springs the only one that has been remodeled still? I forgot which one had the supplies sitting out front ready to get started.

Ok here is the list of Remodeled Shelters in the Smokies:

IceWater Springs, Pecks Corner, Davenport Gap ( still has a Cage in Front ) and Silars Bald.

Birch Springs Gap Shelter is gone !! It has been replaced with several very nice tent platforms.

I hope this helps.
