wookie, stringing together trails along the whole coast would be really tough since highway 1 and 101 hug the coast so close for so many miles. and then youve got the festering socal sprawl which would be a smoggy roadwalk of a start, although there are many many nice beaches to ease your worried mind. big sur has excellent trails, but none that connect north to south for any significant distance (sykes hot springs, big sur. cant miss under any circumstances.) redwood has excellent trails that go north to south but i think youd be lucky to get 100 miles out of it. then there is the oregon coastal trail which is 360 miles, but about 100 of them are on roads, often highway 101. i was discouraged from attempting it for this reason. in washington, the olympic national park will provide you with some of the most spectacular coastal walking imaginable, as the road finally gives the ocean a breather, and the ocean thrives. its rugged and pure wonder. however, to the north and south of park boundaries are indian reservations. this would require phone calls and permits and i wouldnt expect a trail, so it would be an adventure. also southern coastal wa is an armpit of sorts. and although you should probably do it north-south because of wind (at least thats the case in wa&or), cape flattery, the northwesternest part of the cont us, would be the best finish to a journey, better than katahdin. a special, special place. personally, i would bike to redwood and walk from there. fantastic idea. your post looked lonely.

that helps actually- is there always a southern wind hitting you in the face in wa & or? could one just hitch on the road stretches?

What is the bike route from Mexico? Is there information on the internet about it?

when i hiked a week in midsummer on the wa coast i noticed no major wind direction. but all the cyclists i met were going south, i just feel like ive heard the winds blow south, i would double check that. adventure cycling is the one. all the cyclists refered me to it, they make routes and maps and are seminal in the community. im sure they have a web page. hitching the coast is fairly easy (not as easy as trail towns, but easier than almost anywhere else in usa.) and effin fun. plus there are state parks all through nocal and or that offer two buck “hiker-biker” camping rates. however you slice it, it will be frizz-nesh. when are you thinking of doing it?

thinking about this summer. Might just do California. I just ordered the guidebooks, so that might make a difference. I’d like to walk the whole way, but maybe take a kayak around the road walks? That would take some logistisism for sure. Who knows. Just getting the pieces together. What are you getting into this summer?

There’s supposed to be a good ~100km trail on Vancouver Island that I’ve always intended on doing someday. Instead of finishing in WA, maybe you could cross the border and do some hiking on that beautiful chunk of land.
