Leisure time book recommendations

What books would you recommend reading while on the trail. I am looking for ones that kind of fit the experience you are having or are inspiring and or educational and interesting. They can be either fact or fiction. Last time I hiked someone gave me a book about the Lewis and Clark expedition to bring with me. I opted to bring another book which was good because the the Lewis and Clark book wasn’t exactly what I was looking for and it was heavy too. By the way, I’ve read Brysons book a few times already.

SOUTH is Ernest Shakleton’s description of his last expedition to the South Pole, 1914-1917. One of the greatest adventure/survival stories of all time. Un-freaking-real.

Another great book on Shackelton is Endurance by Alfred Lansing. “In the Land of the White Death” is another great book of preserverance in the face of adversity. I can’t remember the author but it concerns some Russian sailors caught in the ice in the Artic ocean for a couple of years. Also is you enjoyed the Bryson book his “Short History of Nearly Everything” is an interesting book.

The Stand unabridged version by Stephen King. Now that’s a road trip. I am an avid reader and if I could only read one book ever again, this would be it.

The Maine Woods By Henry David Thoreau,
One of my favorites. It has a good account of Thoreau’s hike to the summit of Ktaadn.

I know this was posted on the AT thread, put for any PCTers out there, take a look at Stehpen Whitney’s “The Sierra Nevada”. It’s a naturalist guide but reads like a novel! Beautifully written.
