Springer Mt was not the original Southern end of the trail. They changed it from Mt Ogelthorpe years ago for good reason. Why not extend the AT's Northern end up to the Canadian border and bypass Baxter. It would be an improvement. The whole Baxter experience was kind of a bummer.

Can you elaborate on why your experience at Baxter was a bummer to you?

After the contrived drama BSP officials displayed recently over Scott Jurek's hike, I'd second the notion. A new, unrestricted Northern terminus would be a perfect remedy for their patronizing attitude towards AT hikers and it would also address the various access issues.

I think that the top of Maine at the border with Canada would be best. Run it West of Moosehead Lake and avoid going near Baxter. It would be quite a bit of work but it would be worth it. New remote trail towns. The trail would be about 2500 miles long. That whole Baxter thing sucked anyway.

Well guys for your information the IAT does go to Canada check it out.
You can add about a 100 more miles on to the AT if you want to.
Rules are for all people’s safety. If have groups of large number moving along the trail to celebrate one person achievement we have lost more then the essence of what the AT is about .
