Ley Maps - Continental Divide Trail

There has been some debate about the merits of normal sized 8.5X11 versus 11X14 prints of Jonathan Ley’s maps.

Here’s another option that I tried yesterday & it works great - a lightweight plastic magnifying glass. I bought one in Walmart ( $4 - Stationary Dpt., brand name ‘Licken’) that has a 2X/4X lens. I’ll remove the lens from the frame and just carry the 2.5” (they come in a 3” diameter size also) lens itself with the maps. With the lens I can easily see the finest detail on my 8.5X11 maps.

Happy Trails!

That was a great idea, Freebird. I bought a couple credit card magnifying glasses, but those were only 2x magnifying power. I found a small 1 1/2 inch folding pocket magnifying glass that I ended up with. It’s a Bausch & Lomb 4x. Going with the 8.5x11 maps also. Printed out 300 of those buggers!!

I’ll be starting a little before you, but I imagine I’ll be seeing you along the way.

I’ll check on your journal when I can to see where you are.

Have a great walk!!

hey Stumpy,

I got a couple emails that had other good ideas on this one:
one hiker picked up a good magnifying glass from a Barns & Noble book store for 99 cents.

Another hiker mentioned that a few higher-end compasses have decent magnifying lenses on them.

I probably won’t catch up to you unless you lay off your high octane signature Stumpy blend coffee. ‘;)’

Happy Trails!
